Digital Impressions, and Why People Notice
Of all the equipment in the office, the intra-oral scanner is the one patients comment on most, because it replaces the single most disliked step in dentistry.
The traditional impression involved a tray of setting material held in the mouth for several minutes. For anyone with a sensitive gag reflex it was genuinely unpleasant, and it occasionally had to be repeated when the result was not accurate enough.
The scanner is a small wand that photographs the teeth in three dimensions. Nothing sets, nothing is held in place, and the result appears on a screen where you can see it. If a section is incomplete, that part is simply rescanned rather than the whole thing being redone.
It is used for crowns, for Invisalign planning, for nightguards and for sports mouthguards.
Planning Implants Properly
Replacing a missing tooth with an implant depends entirely on what is underneath the gum, and that is not something a flat X-ray shows reliably.
Cone beam imaging measures the height and width of available bone and shows exactly where nerves and sinuses sit. That turns implant placement from an estimate into a plan.
