What to Do Before You Get Here
Some dental problems have useful first aid, and the interval between phoning and arriving is often when it matters.
A knocked-out permanent tooth is the genuine emergency. Handle it by the crown rather than the root, rinse it gently if it is dirty, and if you can, place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, keep it in milk. Time matters enormously here.
A broken or chipped tooth is rarely an emergency unless there is pain or a sharp edge cutting your tongue. Rinse with warm water and keep any pieces.
Swelling of the face or jaw should never wait, and never be left over a weekend. Call.
A lost filling or crown can usually wait a day or two. Keep the crown if you have it — it can sometimes be recemented.
Pain that wakes you at night or that no longer responds to painkillers usually means the nerve is involved, and it will not settle on its own.
Treatment That Unfolds Over Time
Not everything needs doing at once, and pretending otherwise is how patients end up avoiding dentistry altogether.
Where a mouth needs substantial work, we sequence it: what is urgent, what is important but not urgent, and what is genuinely optional.
