Jawbone exists to hold teeth, and when teeth go, it shrinks: up to half the ridge width can vanish in the first year after an extraction. Bone grafting reverses that loss, rebuilding a solid foundation so implants, and the smile they support, become possible again.
Grafting material, from your own bone, a processed donor or mineral source, or a combination, is placed where bone is deficient, acting as a scaffold your body steadily replaces with its own living bone over three to nine months. The procedure is done under local anesthetic, with sedation available, and most patients describe recovery as far easier than they imagined. Every case is planned on 3D imaging so we graft exactly where needed and no more.
If it stands between you and a fixed, permanent tooth, usually yes, and we will show you the scan, the plan, and the costs so you can judge for yourself. Occasionally implant designs can work around bone loss without grafting; when that is true for you, we will say so.
