For decades, getting a crown followed the same tired script: uncomfortable impression trays, a fragile temporary crown, a three-week wait while a lab did its work, then a second appointment and a second injection. CEREC technology deleted that entire script, and it lives in our Kamloops office.
CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) is a complete crown-making system: a 3D scanner, design software, and a milling machine that carves your crown from a solid block of dental porcelain, all in the same room where you are sitting.
Minutes 0–20: Your tooth is prepared and frozen once, then scanned with a small digital camera. No trays, no goop. Minutes 20–40: Your dentist designs the crown on screen, matching shape, bite, and shade to your natural teeth. You can watch; most patients find it fascinating. Minutes 40–60: The milling unit carves the crown, which is then glazed, polished, and permanently bonded. You leave with your finished tooth.
The ceramic blocks CEREC uses are the same high-strength materials premium labs use, and the digital fit is typically tighter than one derived from a physical impression that can distort in transit. Studies tracking CEREC restorations over decades show survival rates on par with traditional crowns. The honest caveat: a few situations, certain shade-matching challenges on front teeth, some bridge designs, still favour a master lab technician, and when yours does, we will say so.
No temporary crown popping off over dinner. No sensitive tooth wearing plastic for three weeks. No second time-off-work request. And for teeth that crack suddenly, same-day capability often means a genuine emergency fix rather than a patch-and-wait.
