Straighter teeth are easier to clean, easier on your bite, and, let's be honest, great to look at. The question most adults and teens in Kamloops ask us is not whether to straighten, but how: Invisalign or braces?
Braces move teeth using brackets bonded to each tooth, connected by wires your provider adjusts every few weeks. They work continuously and handle even the most complex movements.
Invisalign moves teeth with a series of custom, nearly invisible plastic aligners, each worn about two weeks, 20 to 22 hours per day. Every aligner nudges your teeth a fraction of a millimetre toward the plan mapped out digitally at the start.
Appearance. Invisalign wins decisively. Most people will not notice you are in treatment. Modern ceramic braces are subtler than the metal of decades past, but they are still visible.
Comfort. Aligners have no brackets or wires to irritate cheeks, and no emergency visits for a poking wire. Both systems involve mild pressure when teeth are actively moving; that is simply what tooth movement feels like.
Eating and hygiene. Invisalign comes out for meals, so nothing is off the menu and brushing and flossing stay normal. Braces require avoiding hard and sticky foods and add real effort to daily cleaning.
Discipline. Here is Invisalign's catch: it only works while it is in your mouth. If 22 hours a day of wear sounds unrealistic for you or your teen, fixed braces remove the willpower variable entirely.
Complexity. Invisalign now handles the large majority of cases, including many that once required braces. Severe rotations, significant bite corrections, and some jaw discrepancies may still be treated best with braces or a combined approach.
Cost. In BC, comprehensive Invisalign and braces are typically priced in a similar range, roughly $5,000 to $8,500 depending on complexity and length of treatment. Many dental plans with orthodontic coverage treat them identically.
We understand the appeal of the price tag, but straightening teeth without in-person exams, X-rays, and monitoring is a genuine clinical risk. Teeth are moved through living bone; when that goes wrong, fixing it costs far more than doing it properly the first time.
